Video: Lux – “The Window”

Lux has revealed the video for “The Window” from its debut album We Are Not The Same. The clip, inspired by Lux’s favorite David Lynch and Tim Burton movies, was initially planned to be fully animated, but now stars the band’s Leah Rosen and David Chandler (Rosen also directed the clip.)  Woody Allen was an inspiration as well.  “The first scene is inspired by Midnight In Paris,’ the latest Woody flick that we watched and loved,” says Rosen.

The video is a visual representation of the abnormal sleep paralysis and hypnogogic hallucinations that afflict Rosen. She explains, “With my disorder, sometimes I’ll wake up, but I’ll still be physically paralyzed, which causes the hypnotic hallucinations.  These hallucinations usually consist of me trying to turn on the bedroom light or screaming for someone to wake me up. All I want to do is wake up, but I can’t.”

This kind of unique perspective has endeared new fans to Lux since its formation in early 2010. The band’s sound, inspired by some of the most essential artists of the era of indie and underground music (Pavement, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, The Magnetic Fields, The Jesus & Mary Chain, New Order, Blondie), features Rosen and Chandler trading off vocals, guitars, synths and drum programming.

In addition to recent coverage from Black Book and a nod for “The Window” as KEXP’s “Song of The Day,” fans can look for Lux featured in the upcoming June issue of MAGNET magazine.  We Are Not The Same, the debut album by Lux is out now.

Psychadelic Rock Trio Capsula Touring This Month

Capsula’s ripping set will feature songs from the critically acclaimed sophomore album and sonic masterpiece, In The Land of Silver Souls (Krian Music Group) that has been garnering nationwide praise from media and fans alike. Their music roars with a combination of garage rock toughness and modern style that have earned them a wide range of comparisons from The Stooges and The Pixies to Sonic Youth and David Bowie.

Their first single “Hit ‘n’ Miss” kicks off with a classic garage rock riff, before Martin rips into a Bowie-esque tale about the rise and fall of those seeking fast stardom in the big city.

“The album’s single, “Hit ‘N’ Miss,” resonates like a distant cousin to David Bowie’s “Suffragette City,” featuring a chorus that should have you singing along fairly quickly.” – RCRD LBL

“Listeners who have been hankering for a satisfying set of down and dirty rock and roll basics, served up with energy and panache, will find their dreams answered. Party on, Garth.” – PopMatters

Witnessing Capsula live is an experience not easily forgotten, as they tear though blistering washes of guitar and pounding rhythms delivered with the true essence of punk rock attitude.

Capsula continues to prove that rock and roll is definitely a universal language. You don’t have to understand every lyric of a Capsula song to capture the unbound emotion of their dirty rock.

Capsula US Tour Dates:

5/23         Highline Ballroom in New York, NY

5/24         Howard Theater in Washington, DC

5/25         Level Room in Philadelphia, PA

Download: Giant Giant Sand – “Detained”

In anticipation of Fire Records’ June 12th release of the country rock opera, Tucson, and Howe Gelb‘s May 10th performance at Joe’s Pub in New York City, Giant Giant Sand release the new track “Detained.” The track, which just premiered on Brooklyn Vegan, was inspired “by the clutch of cumbia that fevers the many particles of this album,” says Howe Gelb.

As a sort of homage, he’s named the album Tucson after the town he’s called home for forty years. Taking place in the town of Tucson, the story revolves around a “semi grizzled man with overt boyish naïveté” who sets off to escape the trappings of hometown life and embarks on a life-changing road trip; eschewing all his worldly goods and leaving behind what he has loved, encountering jail at the Mexican border, finding new old love at a train station saloon, all while ‘the end of the world’ provides the landscape game changer. The album is a dusty work of art, conjuring images of the all knowing desert and a confused river inside the cacti-strewn sound scape.

Listen: Wintersleep – “Nothing Is Anything (Without You)”

Nova Scotia’s Wintersleep produces music that has the ability to grab listeners with its pop charm and keep them captivated with its subtle complexities. Having won a Juno Award, performed on The Late Show With David Letterman, and spent the last few years touring extensively in support of two successful releases, the band is now gearing up to unleash Hello Hum, a multi-dimensional record full of catchy pop hooks, thoughtful lyrics, and heartfelt sentiment. Co-produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann (MGMT, The Flaming Lips) and Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai), Hello Hum is due out June 12th via Roll Call Records/ILG. The album’s first single, “Nothing is Anything (Without You)” premiered with Paste Magazine, who calls it “…an infectious three minute song that shows that the band is back in full force.” Indeed, the track features a lively guitar melody and a driving combination of drum beats and handclaps.

It is available to stream today and will be available for purchase May 15th on all digital retailers. The new record opens with “Hum,” which offers a swirling, slow-building intro to the series of energetic tracks that follow. The upbeat “In Came The Flood” showcases the depth of the band’s sound, featuring melodic vocals atop a densely layered foundation of guitars, vocal harmonies, and driving percussion “Smoke” closes out the album on a softer note, allowing melodic vocals to shine over a subdued instrumental background and steady rolling drum beat. Wintersleep fans will have a chance to catch the band live as they head out on a limited US tour this spring. Having already shared stages with acts like Pearl Jam, Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade, The Hold Steady and Paul McCartney, be sure to catch Wintersleep in your city!

Sample Some Brand New Shit Robot

Shit Robot Announces New 12” on DFA, “Teenage Bass” b/w “Space Race,” the First Release In His New Project, The Green Machine

Speaking about the new release, Shit Robot said: “After the album I just wanted to go back to my roots and make some dance 12”s, music for people to get drunk and jump around to.”

Shit Robot returns with his first new material since the release of his debut long-player, 2010’s From The Cradle To The Rave. After spending much of 2010 and 2011 touring the globe with his live show – including a string of dates opening/performing with LCD Soundsystem during their final shows in NYC – the rebooted Robot is back with The Green Machine. The first result of his Stuttgart/New York studio adventures is a double-header of dancefloor jams, “Teenage Bass” b/w “Space Race,” which will be released digitally and on vinyl via DFA on May 21, 2012.

It’s the first in a series of releases called The Green Machine, which will culminate in an album early next year. Lead cut “Teenage Bass” rides a rude EBM bassline and rave alert sirens, before expanding further with key changing chords and a defining arpeggiator. The hypnotic “Space Race” is a distant relative of 2007’s “Chasm” – a meandering, melodic, star-gazing Robo-techno workout.

Download: Prinzhorn Dance School – “I Want You”

Prinzhorn Dance School return with “I Want You,” the new single from their sophomore DFA release Clay Class. The song is both  personal and universal, a minimal love song with maximal impact,  recalling both The XX & the Breeders. The single EP includes 2 brand new tracks recorded specifically for this single – “Promise” & “Love In The Ground, along with a special cover song swap with The Brian James Gang. Brian James covers the Prinzhorn song “Usurper,” while Prinzhorn chooses Brian James Gang song “Green Worms,” which finds Sooz singing/talking/rapping over an undeniable Prinzhorn-esque minimal thump.
