Greg Laswell Remakes His Own Songs AND Was Going To Be An Astronaut!

greglaswell

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, singer/songwriter Greg Laswell has penned a love letter of sorts to his fans with his forthcoming album I Was Going to Be an Astronaut to be released on February 11, 2014 and available for pre-order now. For this special 11-track collection, he’s re-made, re-imagined, and re-recorded some of his – and his fans – favorite songs throughout his career.

Laswell explains, “I’d been playing alternate versions of some of these songs at my shows over the past few years and every time people would come up afterwards and ask if there was ever going to be any recorded versions of those songs. It happened enough times that I decided to do it. Another reason for doing this is because when I slow down a song or sing it a different way than when originally recorded, the meaning tends to change.”

Fans will be thrilled to learn that the alternate versions of “How the Day Sounds” and “What a Day” are among the tracks included on the CD. The album also features a cover of Sparklehorse’s “It’s a Wonderful Life,” which Laswell says is his favorite song on the album. His favorite remake of his own, however, is the new version of “December,” which was a song that didn’t make his critically acclaimed debut, 2006‘s Through Toledo. Of all the tracks on the record, the artist says “December” and “How the Day Sounds” are the songs that changed the most from their original versions.

This collection wouldn’t be complete without one of his most popular songs, “Comes and Goes (In Waves),” which was his breakout hit from 2008’s Three Flights from Alto Nido. The single garnered more than 6 million plays on YouTube, 3 million Spotify streams, 100,000 digital downloads via SoundScan, and multiple placements in music and TV, including True Blood, NCIS and Grey’s Anatomy. Adding to his accolades is the fact that 100 new Greg Laswell stations are created every day on Pandora.

Of stripping “Comes and Goes (In Waves)” down for the album, Laswell says, “I was nervous about it. It was one of the first songs I tried to record and I couldn’t do it. I wanted to be mindful to not take away what people loved of the original. I tried to choose songs that I thought I could put a new spin on while not getting in the way of what I already did.”

Listen: Greg Laswell – “Comes and Goes In Waves” (2013 Remake)

As for the album’s curious title, I Was Going To Be an Astronaut, it’s Laswell’s favorite line from “December.” He explains the lyric’s significance to him: “It’s saying the more I try to plan for things, the more other things happen – personally and professionally. I feel like when I sing that song now it’s more of a celebration of that fact rather than the mystery of this crazy life that we’re all living. Whereas when I first wrote it, it was a little bit more out of despair. I really, really enjoyed coming back and doing that song from the perspective of where I am now,” he says.

I Was Going To Be an Astronaut Track Listing:
1. I Don’t Believe It’s Through (2013 Remake)
2. It’s a Wonderful Life (Sparklehorse cover)
3. Comes and Goes (In Waves) (2013 Remake)

Brand New: Phantogram – “Fall In Love”

Phantogram

Phantogram have set February 18, 2014 as the release date for their forthcoming new album, Voices.

This is the critically acclaimed New York duo’s first major-label full-length, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated albums of the new year. The pre-order for Voices went live yesterday

Pre-order via iTunes

Pre-order via Amazon

Moreover, fans who pre-order from iTunes will receive an instant download of the band’s brand new single “Fall In Love”, which is also available at other digital retailers today, and as the A-side of a limited-edition 7″ vinyl single at physical retailers in early 2014.

Before the official radio add date, “Fall In Love” is already captivating radio gatekeepers and fans alike. Its effect proved so powerful that multiple stations in major markets added the song into early rotation. Over the past week “Fall In Love” has become the most-added track at Alternative Radio, and it continues to rise. Feedback has been just as astounding.

The song itself sees duo Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter craft a cerebral and charismatic gateway into the record’s lush landscapes and entrancing lyricism. It’s elegant electronic alternative pop fortified by hip-hop futurism and electro soul. You’ll instantly fall for it.

Phantogram will be performing on the West Coast during the week of the record’s release, making the following stops:

02.20.14          Oakland, CA               Fox Theatre
02.22.14          Los Angeles, CA         Wiltern Theatre
02.23.14          Ventura, CA                Ventura Theatre

Voices follows up the group’s celebrated self-titled EP, which spawned the track “Black Out Days”. Phantogram performed the song on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon in the midst of a triumphant fall tour that saw the pair and their live band headline numerous sold-out houses as well as an unforgettable performance at the historic Hollywood Bowl supporting M83.

Recorded in Los Angeles with co-producer John Hill (Santigold, MIA), Voices resounds immortally. Phantograms full-length debut Eyelid Movies [2010, Barsuk] and Nightlife EP [2011, Barsuk] established them as one of music’s most intriguing indie outfits. Soon, the likes of The Flaming Lips and Big Boi [Outkast] began seeking them out for studio collaborations. Republic Records also recognized their spirit and joined forces with them in 2013.

New Music: Turin Brakes – “Time and Money”

xJYKEsw
Recorded over two weeks of eighteen hour days in legendary Welsh studio Rockfield, Turin Brake’s sixth studio album We Were Here (to be released October 8th via Cooking Vinyl/Red River Entertainment) gorgeously chimes and echoes with the pastoral psychedelia of Pink Floyd, the sunset soul of Laurel Canyon, the blues of the Mississippi Delta and the band’s own six-stringed past.

Watch and share now the video for album’s first single “Time and Money”, which features the bloody capture of a pension fund manager.

Formed in Balham, South West London, in 1999 by childhood friends Olly Knights and Gale Paridjanian, Turin Brakes signed to French label Source in 2000 and released their Mercury Music Prize nominated debut album The Optimist (2001). Their second album Ether Song (2003) entered the UK album charts at number 4 and spawned the Top 5 single “Pain Killer” (Summer Rain). The Top 10 album JackinABox was released in 2005 and followed by Dark On Fire (2007). The band signed to Cooking Vinyl in 2009 and released Outbursts (2010).
