Newest Love: French Horn Rebellion

French Horn Rebellion (Robert and David Perlick-Molinari) kick off 2011 by announcing the US self-release of their debut album The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion on April 19th digitally and May 24th physically (Once Upon A Time Records). They’re also appearing at Austin’s SXSW, stopping for an Asian date with MGMT and embarking on a 27 date North American tour supporting French electro pop outfit Yelle starting 17th April.

Written, produced and mixed by Robert and David,The Infinite Music…’ is a debut album that warps the fabric of dance, electro, rock and funk. Crucially, the album also follows an intergalactic narrative that tracks the physical and emotional journey of an unknown French Horn player. “There is a story running through the album, it’s about the Universe. We’re pretty clear on what the story is, but what you take away from it may be something entirely different,” says David.

On the back of just three EP’s to date, these two unassuming brothers, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have already toured and played with the likes of Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, The Drums, Cut Copy and SebastiAn.

The Brooklyn-based duo already had an illustrious pedigree; David produced MGMT’s indie release, Time to Pretend EP for New York indie Cantora Records. The band have also remixed the likes of MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD and Alex Winston. Following packed out NYC performances at CMJ, the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival and in support to MNDR at the launch of new Neon Gold / Popjustice party POPSHOP, FHR will visit Europe in March for a handful of shows before heading home to play SXSW and then on to Asia for shows in Hong Kong (w/ MGMT), China, Korea and Japan. Their 27 date North American tour supporting Yelle kicks off in Phoenix on April 17th.

Newest Love: Gordon Voidwell

On the track, “Ivy League Circus,” the velvety, 80’s R&B style vocals glide over an elastic, electro-funk groove. The clip was directed by The Wilderness, who also helmed videos for Passion Pit, The Juan MacLean, Antipop Consortium, and Spank Rock.

He has produced songs on both Das Racist mixtapes (“Shorty Said” and “Puerto Rican Cousins”), an official remix of Twin Shadow’s I Can’t Wait,” and the track “Spring Fever” for battle rap king Iron Solomon.

Gordon has also won the adorations of everyone from indie darlings BRAHMS (who remixed Voidwell’s “Ivy League Circus”) to pop music masterminds like Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson (who declared “I love this shit.  I play it on my radio show, in my house AND in my sets.”)  Mayer Hawthorne, another fan, even invited Gordon to open his tour this past Fall along with The Heavy. His first full length debut album will be out later this year.

You can grab a free download of the original AND BRAHMS remix of “Ivy League Circus” over at Stereogum: click here!

Get In On This!

If you don’t get in quick on Foster the People, you will be sorry. I mean, yeah, you can get in on it later but that’s no fun. That would be like me just now getting into reading the “Twilight” series. Little late — that boat left the docks a looooong time ago.

I think huge things are to come for Foster the People. They are who I’ll be paying attention to this year. Last summer, people fell in love with “Pumped Up Kicks.” Tomorrow, their EP will be released. It’s got three songs: “Helena Beat,” “Houdini,” and “Pumped Up Kicks.” These are the kinds of songs that you never get tired of hearing. That’s rare and awesome.

Check out your new favorite song, “Helena Beat.”

Mogwai “How to Be a Werewolf”

Now here’s something out of the ordinary and really cool…

Click image to watch the video!

Check out this video for an edited version of Mogwai’s outstanding track “How To Be A Werewolf” off their forthcoming LP Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will (out Feb. 15, 2011 on Sub Pop). The video is an excerpt from the upcoming documentary 30 Century Man directed by Antony Crook who is also responsible for the gorgeous cover art of Hardcore...The documentary centers on James Bowthorpe, the round-the-world champion cyclist who beat the previous record by an epic 20 days.

This past summer Bowthorpe found himself in the isolated Norwegian countryside in the middle of a “white” night with director Crook for the film. “We were so far north the sun never set. I wanted the film to somehow give a sense of what James had achieved and the idea of him being alone, somewhere wild and isolated,” says Crook. Carrying with him at the time of filming were Mogwai’s new demos. Listening to “How To Be A Werewolf” on repeat while driving around looking for shoot locations, Crook says, seemed to fit perfectly with the landscape. When Mogwai saw the footage, the group decided to edit the song, constructing a version exclusively for the film. “We found the perfect backdrop to tell this story of somebody who points his bike at the horizon and then doesn’t stop pedaling. It’s a film about never giving up,” says Crook.

Upcoming Show: Mimosa

Earlier this month, Mimosa came out with another album, Silver Lining. If you are a fan of The Glitch Mob or electronic dub and breaks, you’ll love Mimosa.

Personally, I’m a big fan of last years, Flux For Life.

Anyways, Wednesday, November 3rd Mimosa is playing in Pittsburgh at Mr. Smalls Theatre with The New Deal and Two Fresh.

I’m more of a new fan when it comes to The New Deal and Two Fresh. And I enjoy The New Deal more than Two Fresh. But, that’s just me. And I haven’t even listened to THAT much of either, so maybe that’s not even accurate…who knows?

Check out this live video of The New Deal performing “Home” in Brooklyn. If you refrain from dancing, (I mean, c’mon, even if it’s just a little bit in your seat) you must not have a soul.
