Free Download: Teleprompter – “Banshee”

“the sweat-soaked energetic feel of acts like Death From Above 1979, Les Savy Fav and early Rapture. Makes me wanna angry-dance.” –Dan Buhagiar, triple j

Teleprompter merges angular post-punk with indie rock elements, resulting in an enigmatic, no-holds-barred sound that is a departure from conventional classification. The first single from this EP is “Banshee”, produced by Yama Indra (G.L.O.V.E.S/Damn Arms). “Banshee,” as the name suggests, is a frenzied indie-punk tune with melodic vocals and catchy guitar work.

Chief – “Breaking Walls”

This song is absolutely AMAZING. It pulls you in from the beginning (which reminded me of Fleetwood Mac) and it keeps you listening with it’s sunny & sad-at-the-same-time melody. Chief released their album Modern Rituals last month, and you can check out the album over at Amie Street and download “Breaking Walls” for free.

No Surrender

Did anyone else know that the character Darnell (aka Crabman) from My Name is Earl is in a sweet ass group?

No stranger to the New York underground scene, No Surrender is gearing up to release their intricate sophomore effort Medicine Babies (ZerOKilled Music, Fall 2010). Blending hip-hop, electro, soul, synth-pop, and indie-rock, No Surrender’s spanning sound is genre-bending.

Enlisting European production team Radioclit, TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, New York fixture DJ Monica Sharp, and former Tricky muse Costanza, their guests are equally as diverse, and equally as interesting.

After self-releasing their critically lauded debut, White Power Black Magic, No Surrender was put on hold when Eddie Steeples became a permanent cast member on NBC’s My Name Is Earl, playing Darnell/Crabman. Putting unfinished tracks on the back burner, Seraphim participated in different projects (including guesting on tracks for Evil Nine) until Steeples finished filming. Picking up right where they left off, but adding years of experience and influences, No Surrender took on producer Costanza Francavilla to finish Medicine Babies in the ZerOKilled studio in Brooklyn.

“Your new favorite shit.” –Vice Magazine

“…a groping, grimy jam sticky with parking-lot feedback, Rick James-esque yelps, and fuzzy synths… Just remember that Medicine Babies is the name of the album dropping this fall, and it’s gonna be dope.” – RCRD LBL

Get It Now: The first single from Medicine Babies is “Godda Get It” featuring production by Radioclit.

Sunset Rubdown’s Dragonslayer

Dragonslayer

Dragonslayer is Sunset Rubdown’s (technically) fourth album, but I’d consider it their third because their first LP was more of a solo project by lead singer Spencer Krug released in 2005. Their second album is when the project became more of an actual band, with their album Shut Up I Am Dreaming. Despite their status as comparatively venerable on tributes to the indie scene, Sunset Rubdown doesn’t get very much attention.

I wasn’t sure what I thought about the album when I first listened to it. Actually, I’m still not sure. I enjoy it, and there’s no doubt that it’s good, but it isn’t likely to fall into my music rotation this summer.

The first song, “Silver Moons”, features a piano and is a good starting point. “Idiot Heart” is quickly becoming one of the most listened to tracks on Dragonslayer. It’s one of the better songs on the album, and some parts even remind me of The Cars. Tracks three and four both sound the same to me and I can skip over them without hesitation. “

“You Go on Ahead (Trumpet Trumpet II)” is another very likeable song that’s worth mentioning, but my favorite is “Nightingale/December Song.” It begins with drums and sounds just like Mahjongg.

Then, we get a few electro-pop sounds before Krug’s voice bursts onto the scene. You’d never expected this sound to emerge when the song began. At the end of the second verse, Krug croons, “You need the one who slowly burns/and burns to stay alive/In this way you will come find me in December.” Then, we have an instrumental intermission before the third verse that is so riveting you’ll want to play it over and over.

Another point to mention that may (or may not) draw you to have a listen, is that Spencer Krug is also the lead singer in the more widely-known band, Wolf Parade. If you’re a fan of Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective, you especially should give Sunset Rubdown a chance.

Leftys Can Use Scissors, too

300x3003

Scissors for Lefty is just a big, happy family! Or maybe TWO happy families.

Peter and James Krimmel met up with Bryan Garza in the early 2000s while in college. In 2002, after moving to San Francisco, Bryan’s brother Robby joined in on the group. So, there were two pairs from two families. Maybe that was a bit too organized for them, because in 2006 another family member joined yet again. Steven Garza does his part with bass and with dancing. Yes, dancing. Now, Robby has more time to devote to the guitar while playing.

Last year, Underhanded Romance was released. The band’s debut Bruno, came out in 2005. While I haven’t listened to their first album, I can say that I love their second!

I first listened to their track “Ghetto Ways”, figuring that if I liked it, I’d download more. Great choice for my initial listening. Right this moment actually, I am working on downloading the rest of the album. (Emusic, folks…a wonderful thing.)

I must admit, I am saddened that I haven’t learned of these scissor people until now, especially since they’ve played alongside of Interpol and Bloc Party (2 of my faves)! And Pulp is one of their influences!

I’m going to assume that you’ll like Scissors for Lefty. If you don’t, then well okay — you won’t be downloading them. But, if ya do…my faves are (obviously) “Ghetto Ways”, “Nickels and Dimes”, and “Next to Argyle”. I’d skip “Wondering Arms” and “X’s are Forever”. Don’t get me wrong, the whole album is good, but if you’re gonna be picky and not have the whole thing…then skip those two. “Lay Down Your Weapons” is a hilarious song. “I been locked up a long time baby/ since I was nine/ just got out yesterday man/ bought myself this New York steak knife”. Ha!
