Newest Love: Youngsmith

Youngsmith

Like Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer”, Youngsmith’s “Red” at first seems like a simple song. Yet another songwriter singing his wares. But by the end, it reveals a powerful and memorable soul. The new single by this Brisbane songwriter echoes the style of narrative songwriters of the past much like Simon & Garfunkel and writers of that ilk, but with a few rougher edges.

Youngsmith’s music is about getting you in touch with parts of your soul you don’t want to talk to. If you want to remember the song and sing it as loud as you can in your car and actually feel something through the lyrics, its for you. If you want to tap your feet to something, cry to something, hurt to something… this music is for you.

“Red” is a classic mix of folk and rock, sounding better with every listen. The song talks about an old friend of Smith’s he began a relationship with after losing everything. In this dark place, he found hope in an unlikely place. A redheaded girl…. simple in its accompaniment for the first half, urging you to tap your feet to the chorus. It soon breaks down into a strong and beautiful lament, questioning “Red, how’d you do that?”.

Recorded and engineered by Smith in his home studio and mixed by Bryce Moorhead – who’s work currently sits atop the ARIA charts with Violent Soho’s WACO. “Red” includes elements similar to Vance Joy’s “Georgia” or Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love”. Laments about life and love.

With a striking film clip by Dan Greatz (Violent Soho, Ball Park Music), “Wither” started a nation wide fan base “Red” plans to expand and build on through its wider sound, unforgettable chorus and upcoming national tour in support of the track.

Smith now has been making his own music for ten years. Having played both in a band and a solo artist, he has produced several EPs, had his work featured and played on national radio, surfing documentaries, in other countries like Germany and the US.

Recently, he’s had his back catalogue added to the Albert & Sons library sharing the digital hallways with the likes of AC/DC and Cold Chisel. Releasing his first single just last year in a combined effort with Shock Records and The A&R Department, “Wither” gained airplay across the country.

Newest Love: Paradise Animals – “Monday Morning”

Paradise

Monday morning I received an email from these guys…with their song “Monday Morning”!!! Coincidence. Nope. Not at all.

And this song is awesome!

The single is from the band’s LP Day Bed, and it’s their very first full length. The album was recorded and produced by the whole band in both Northern Ontario and Toronto.

From the band:
Day Bed is the place we go to rest in the daylight. A place where memories wash over us; a place where we pause and think about life. It’s a collection of songs that highlights the warmth and happiness of family and childhood, the heartbreak of relationships, and the randomness of social life in the 21st century.
Check out the video:
And look out for Day Bed on November 13th!

NDQ

“The psychedelic original is revamped into an electro-pop monster that recalls U2 as much as it does On An On‘s synthier side. Listen below.”  – All Things Go

It’s summer time again and Night Drive is releasing the second installment of their “Summer Covers Series”. Following last years dark disco Radiohead cover (“Where I End and You Begin”), they’ve now filtered the Perfume Genius track, “Queen” through a dancier electronic lens.

Newest Love: IAMDYNAMITE

unnamed

“IAMDYNAMITE have carved deeper into their unique style, blending elements from their musical roots of Seattle sound and 80s pop.“ – Earmilk

“Ridiculously good… The songwriting is light years beyond their debut.” – Pop Dose

“Infectiously catchy hooks that pair atmospheric synths” – The Joy of Violent Movement

” IAMDYNAMITE are back, and they’ve done a complete 180 – making an 80s-inspired slow burn record that comes off as Sting & Oates.” –  A-Sides with Jon Chattman

Michigan-based IAMDYNAMITE announce slew of new tour dates in support of its forthcoming new album Wasa Tusa (out August 7th on Brando Records) and reveal a new cut from the album.

The tour sees the duo of Chris Martin and Chris Phillips hitting the road across the U.S. from August through October playing such venerable venues as NYC’s Webster Hall, House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, Chicago’s Bottom Lounge and many more. A full list of dates can be found below.

The guitar-driven tension of “Bloom” bursts forth much like the name of the track implies. Premiering today, it’s the second cut revealed from IAMDYNAMITE’s sophomore album Wasa Tusa and follows the lead album track “Be There” which recently premiered via EARMILK.

Drawing inspiration from 80’s pop pioneers such as The Police and Hall & Oates to early 2000 nu-rave revivalists such as Klaxons and Simian Mobile Disco, IAMDYNAMITE’s synth-driven rock and alt-pop hooks are as danceable as they are delicious.

Wasa Tusa, set for release on August 7 via Brando Records sees IAMDYNAMITE expanding their repertoire and experimenting in the studio to create a new brand of freewheeling pop.  Produced by Matt Novesky, the album highlights their melodic, hook laden songwriting skills and delivers a swift emotional punch.

Newest Love: Gypsy & The Cat x Client Liaison – “Evolution”

Listen: Gypsy & The Cat x Client Liaison – “Evolution”

The SS Yatch Rock set its proverbial sail afloat through Melbourne this month and on board were power synth duos of Gypsy & the Cat and Client Liaison. The creative time out led to time in the recording studio together and collaborative single “Evolution” was conceived.
“Evolution” weaves those giant musical hooks that first announced Gypsy & the Cat around the performance funky flair of Client Liaison. The combination allows for both the attraction and the edge when they chant “I am the life that defies evolution!”, a true joint-venture, perfectly paired.
The influential blog Neon Gold premiered the single today saying “In the ultimate Down Under double down, Gypsy & The Cat and our new live heroes, Client Liaison, have joined forces on their debut collaboration in the form of “Evolution”. Taking the best parts of both groups, the track is peak ’80s bliss, springing forward with all the sunny side up synths and glimmering gold coast melodies we’ve come to expect from the two luminaries.”
Client Liaison are otherwise both in the studio and on the road having just played key shows in the US this month and booked both Splendour in the Grass and Listen Out festivals into their immediate tour diary. Gypsy & the Cat are in the studio finishing their third album for release in the upcoming summer 2015.

New Music From Iglomat

unnamed

“Great drama, enhanced by their ability to create lovely passages as well as jarring odd moments” – DC Rock Live

“There are deep, medicated grooves and purposefully rough patches. It’s the sort of record that reveals something different every time—circumstantial, temperamental, and yet somehow definitive.” – NME

After the success of “The Kelpies” project with filmmaker Walid Salhab and following the release of the “TicTac Toe” single, the 3rd Iglomat album is here and ready to drop on CD and download. Iglomat III is again another quality collection of bristling post rock electronica that is as melodious as it is “effortlessly cool”. 9 slices of musical sustenance that are as much “food for the soul” as they are “post rock perfection”. And as if to celebrate progression there are even some small forays from the instrumental path, with an energetic vocal performance on “Elgato Elgato” from 7-year-old Noah Macdonald followed by profoundly heart achingly subtle performances from Rachel Sermanni and Jennifer Austin on “King Of The Sun” and “No Place Like Home”.

Perhaps Iglomat’s main technical unit David Jack describes the album best; “Years ago when we first started on this exploration, Iglomat was just an idea and a couple of guitar lines floating around in cyberspace. Now as we’ve grown musically and with communication technology progressing exponentially, we can work as remotely and as freely as we like. Which means the music that we heard in our heads is as close to what comes out of the speakers as near as dammit. A recent review described us as a little bit like Goblin which made me laugh, as we try to be a lot like Goblin. So we must be getting close.”

About Iglomat:

Iglomat thrives in the transitional realm. The cross-continental recording project operates across landlines, highways, and hard drives – chronicling tales of distance and time. Such efforts would normally lose some spontaneity and urgency in the transfers. But consider Iglomat’s pedigree: producer David Jack, a beat chemist praised by no less authority than John Peel (just check his Peel Session) long-time collaborator and another Peel session veteran Scott MacDonald ; and acclaimed photographer Sandy Carson, whose narrative focus comes through as much on record as it does in print.

Newest Love: Hunter Hunted

“With a swift kick to hope-shredding guitars, their brand of ebullient electro-rock immediately revs back to life fueled by an undeniable custom-cut chorus just waiting around the driver’s blindside before it explodes, begging you to sing along.” – Mostly Junk Food

“Hunter Hunted strike alt radio gold with the first single “Blindside” off their forthcoming debut album”. – Neon Gold

“…musical gem” – Idolator

Today, Hunter Hunted announce their upcoming debut album Ready For You, which will come out on July 10 via FreeSolo/RCA. Last week, right before their Sasquatch! Festival set, Los Angeles duo Hunter Hunted revealed their first single “Blindside” of the album. They’ll set out on a 20-date co-headlining tour with Young Rising Sons in July and August and will be able to play album tracks like “Operating”, “Ready For You”, and “End Of The World” live for the first time.

Capable of crafting stadium-sized pop missives that are hugely catchy and wonderfully earnest, the duo of Michael Garner and Dan Chang, write songs that tread an easy path between the head and heart, bursting at the seems with undeniable melodies and choruses that are custom-made to be sung along to, preferably at peak volume while surrounded by several hundred of your brand new very best friends.

On Ready for You Hunter Hunted’s ambition is fantastically evident. It’s a record that seems tailor-made to engineer happiness. It’s a pop record with long legs—packed with tracks that balance razor-sharp hooks with heartfelt sentiment. “We want to make songs that make people happy, songs that you can hear on the radio and that make you want to sing and dance,” says Garner. “We want to get to that point where we make a song that takes the world by storm, where it’s like, ‘Holy shit. This song is hitting so hard. We don’t even know how to handle it!’ We’re still waiting for that moment where all of this just takes off and knocks us off our butts.”

The story of Hunter Hunted begins, at least for most people, with the release of their debut EP, Hunter Hunted, in 2013. However, the group’s roots go back much further as they met at UCLA. They’ve been included in MTV’s Artists To Watch, NYLON’s “Bands to look out for,” Starbucks “Pick of The Week, “Teen Vogue’s “Jam’s of the year,” Billboard Magazines “Scouting Report” and KCRW’s “Bands we Love.”

While standout track “Keep Together” was making the rounds on TV shows, the band’s early singles quickly elevated Hunter Hunted from the ranks of indie-pop hopefuls to serious chart contenders, touring alongside FUN., Fitz and The Tantrums, Weezer, and Twenty One Pilots. The band also turned in lauded performances at Bonnaroo, Governors Ball and Firefly, as well as stops on Conan O’Brien’s late night show and The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show pre-show.

When asked about “Blindside” and the upcoming debut album they say, “We wanted to write songs that were both tiny and huge. Songs that you could play on an acoustic guitar alone or with a big band inside an arena.” With the help of Howard benson and Neil Avron behind the boards, Hunter Hunted have achieved that.

The band has a busy year ahead of them – their co-headlining tour with Interscope’s Young Rising Sons for July/August is only the start of what’s to come.

Newest Love: Psymon Spine

PS

Check out this great new band Psymon Spine. Last week they released their synth-driven, ethereal first single “Eric’s Basement & Secret Tunnels”.

The song will be found on the bands’ new self-titled EP, which was produced by Graham Dickson (Crystal Fighters) and will be seeing a release via Axis Mundi Records on May 19th.

Listen: Psymon Spine – “Shocked”

Psymon Spine’s music is, metaphorically speaking, like a stroll through a rainforest at night with a safe place to return to. Beauty permeates, but there are a thousand ways to die around every corner. Peace and violence are interdependent, and while the full emotional spectrum resides within it, the end goal is optimistic – like the euphoria that follows physical exhilaration.

The songs that make up the new Psymon Spine EP are extremely dualistic by nature, partnering fuzzy synths with lush vocal harmonies, and spastic beats with flowing string arrangements. The bands’ music is like a stroll through a rainforest at night with a safe place to return to. Beauty permeates, but there are a thousand ways to die around every corner. Peace and violence are interdependent, and while the full emotional spectrum resides within it, the end goal is optimistic – like the euphoria that follows physical exhilaration.

Psymon Spine penned “Eric’s Basement & Secret Tunnels” while in transit through Paris in the midst of headlining a European tour (while still college freshmen!), and it was after a show in London that Psymon Spine was offered their first record deal. Soon after that, Parisian imprint Kitsuné asked Psymon Spine to remix Is Tropical’s “Dancing Anymore” (stream), who declared it their favorite mix of the track.
