Lucha VaVOOM

Mexican Masked Wrestling + Burlesque + Comedy = Lucha VaVOOM

Click the image to watch the preview for the 2010 Halloween shows in L.A.

In the spirit of my return from an awesome vacation in Mexico, I’m going to pass along some information today about Lucha VaVOOM, which is where Mexican Masked wrestlers flip and fly, performing breathtaking acrobatic feats as lovably absurd characters with names like Dirty Sanchez, Chupacabra, and Shamu Jr.  In between matches, the finest handpicked burlesque acts from around the world delight the crowds because the folks at Lucha VaVOOM like a little sexo with their violencia!  Lucha VaVOOM has upcoming Halloween shows at LA’s Mayan Theater, October 27th and 28th.

Even more, there’s comedians added to the mix! In the past, comedians like Jeffrey Ross, Patton Oswalt and Jack Black have taken part. Lucha VaVOOM has also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, CBS National News, Carson Daily and several other local news programs.  Recently, dancers and wrestlers from Lucha VaVOOM shared the stage with Ozomatli and Cheech Marin at the Hollywood Bowl, and were one of the top-billed acts at the Chicago Just For Laughs Festival (right under Ellen DeGeneres).

Rooted in history, Lucha VaVOOM draws its inspiration from the bizarre world of 60’s Mexican Lucha Cinema, where brave, masked wrestling crime fighters save the world from evil brains, vampires, the Bermuda Triangle etc; always with an obligatory stop at the local go-go club.

You simply have to see it to believe it!  If Lucha VaVOOM isn’t coming to a city near you this time, be sure to catch an appearance on America’s Top Model on October 6th.

Check ‘Em Out: The Gay Blades

Click to watch the video for "Try To Understand"

Two piece band from NYC, The Gay Blades, have a new album called Savages that’s set for release in October. If you like the Black Keys, definitely give this duo a listen. The tracks all have a little something that makes them stand out, and none of them sound the same either. Opening track “Rock N’ Roll (Part 1)” reminds me a little bit of the White Stripes. “November Fight Song” is another fantastic song from Savages that is original to me in the way that it doesn’t bring any other bands to mind.

Here’s a free download of “Try To Understand” for your enjoyment!

Need Smoking Music?

Check out Lance Herbstrong. From electro to dubstep to  drum-and-bass and electronica, Herbstrong’s mixes are as inventive as their name.

These guys played at Lollapalooza last week (anyone see them?), and they’re giving away a couple free tracks of some reggae remixes! I’ve heard it’s great smoke music, too –(uh, I mean…the name is Lance HERBstrong…) so let that be just another incentive to check them out, even if it’s just outta curiousity.

Setting Sun – “The Sympathetic CEO”

Setting Sun has released a new single, “The Sympathetic CEO” which is about the before and after of the recession. The song is from the perspective of a CEO who’s profited at the expense of others until the economy flops. It’s then that he reflects upon his role in the current financial state. Despite the song being about the job force, economy and politics; it’s not an annoying song by any means! It’s still a sunny song, which is what I like about it.

Setting Sun is currently touring with Quitzow (I posted about both bands last month here), and they’ve also released a new track called “Whatever.” It’s got super fun lyrics like, “Whatever…I do what I want; I dress up like your new age mom.”

New Album: Mystery Jets – Serotonin

Formed in 2005, five piece Brit indie band Mystery Jets refer to as many genres as they want with out being stuck with any of them. Today’s new music Tuesday marks the release of Mystery Jets’ fourth album and newest creation: Serotonin.

Also, check out a couple free Mystery Jets downloads over at Last.fm by clicking here.

My faves from Serotonin are “Show Me the Light”, “Dreaming of Another World” and the title track itself. If you’re not sure if you like the band or haven’t heard any of their stuff, but you are a fan of Foals and We Are Scientists, then give ’em a listen!

October Marks the Release of Deluka’s Debut Album

Back in April, I introduced you guys to UK group Deluka and posted their hit song “Cascade.” Well, after spending a bunch of time in Brooklyn, they’ve written their full-length album that will be digitally released in September (physcially in October) on Vel  Records.

Get The Rapture’s remix of “Cascade” here!

The new material shows the growth Deluka has experienced during their time in Brooklyn. The lush production and the undeniable chorus of “Come Back To Me” prove that this band can write a great pop song.  Gritty songs like “Trespasser” and “Waves” show the band’s mastery of layering of lead singer and guitarist Ellie Innocenti’s rock guitar riffs over the electronic beats of electronics expert Kris Kovacs.  Drummer Stevie Palmer provides the flawless rhythm that has become a trademark of the band’s sound.

Deluka are also no strangers to the dancefloor.  “Mean Streak” has the energy and the attitude to whip any crowd into a frenzy.  The album closer, which has also become a hallmark closer for their electrifying live shows, is the epic Capital City, an anthemic track that could very well become indie rock’s answer to “Empire State of Mind.”

Click here to have a listen and download their newest single, “Nevada.”

New Releases: Active Child & Au Revoir Simone

If you like Grizzly Bear, have a listen to Active Child’s newest, “Curtis Lane.” My favorites are “When Your Love Is Safe” and “Weight of the World.” If you click the picture above, you can sample the songs on Amazon. If you’re a member over at Amie Street, you can get the whole thing for cheaper than Amazon.

The latest from Au Revoir Simone is an album of remixes. It’s got Neon Indians doing a remix of “Another Likely Story” and Silver Columns remixing “We Are Here.” Two great bands remixing another great band. Check it out! (And same as with Active Child, this one’s available on Amazon by clicking the above image, or you can get it cheaper at Amie Street, too! — Maybe it would be wise to become a member over there! BUT if you get the one from Amazon, there’s an extra track of Tanlines’ remix of “Shadows,” and I am loving Tanlines…soooo…you decide! You could just buy the Tanlines mp3 from Amazon and the rest of the album from Amie Street.) Yay!
