Video: Tremor Low – “Give Blood”

image002

Oakland-based trio Tremor Low clearly defines its sounds as “Synthesizers, drum machines, delay and distortion pedals – in that order.”

The band’s arresting sound and visual style were recently captured in the music video for the single “Give Blood,” and signaling the Tremor Low’s first nationwide shot across the bow.  The slow-motion clip, inspired by films such as “Pulp Fiction,” and “Time Crimes,” was shot by director David Dutton in one day while trespassing on private property.

Band member Don Bellenger describes “Give Blood” as “a look at confusion and misplaced blame, and in the end,” he says, “the details of ‘who did what’ or in this case ‘who killed who,’ become irrelevant. We are doomed to repeat our mistakes.”

Of the production itself, Bellenger says, “I tasted lots of fake blood and didn’t like it.  In one particular shot, we threw a bloody knife and then couldn’t find it, so there’s still a very incriminating knife covered in blood out there on this person’s property.”

In addition to Bellenger, Tremor Low is comprised of Fabian Paredes, and Ariel Utz Wirnsberger, who was discovered by Bellenger and Paredes after auditioning two dozen prospective band members.

Coming up in the San Francisco scene, Tremor Low has since drawn the attention of respected Bay Area DJ Aaron Axelsen, who brought the band to the stage and greater exposure, as part of his popular local Popscene event.  Performances at nationally recognized San Francisco venues such as Great American Music Hall and Bottom of The Hill have further cemented the band’s local reputation.

Now, with “Give Blood” out, and new recordings underway, the world is finally ready to fully experience Tremor Low.

Newest Love: The Julian Taylor Band – “Never Gonna Give You Up”

unnamed

With recent packed performances at Canadian Music Week (CMW), showcased on CTV News, an opening spot for super group Magic! at the Mod Club, and a date at The Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts, THE JULIAN TAYLOR BAND has officially release the already widely-acclaimed CD TECH NOIR.

Toronto-based award-winning singer-songwriter Julian Taylor and his band are thrilled about the reaction of their much anticipated new album TECH NOIR. The first single “Never Gonna Give You Up” has already been nominated as a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition and the video has blown up on YouTube with more than 300,000 views – the track storming the Top 40 on the Canadian Alt Rock chart.

In addition, The Julian Taylor Band’s previous member and bass player, Ben Spivak, – who now plays with the massively successful “Magic” – has several song co-writes and also plays on Tech Noir. The band is currently comprised of a group of formidable musicians – Julian Taylor (vocals and guitar), Jeremy Elliott (drums), Steve Pelletier (bass) and David Engle (keys).

A truly gifted performer, Taylor has a distinct delivery that’s raw and emotional. The sound on Tech Noir is a culmination of every musical genre that has influenced him throughout his life and his most recent reincarnation sees him moving towards the kind of music that inspired him as a child. While even more energetic in their live performances, the band’s new soul-driven pop-rock is inspired by the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Wonder and Bill Withers and this is reflected on the new album.

Listen: Mainland – Shiner EP

Watch the video for “Leave the Lights On” below

“Though lead singer Jordan Topf sneers, “Living in the city, I get so bored,” with Julian Casablancas-like aplomb in the track’s bridge, the adolescent energy and colorful nostalgia of these visuals are anything but blasé.” – SPIN

“the spirit of the sunkissed old rock is well alive in this piece, with an infectious guitar line to hook and a solid bass and drum section which gives it an almost krautrocky, motorik feel.” – Tiny Mix Tapes

“They’re great on stage, with tons of humor and energy in each show.” – Blackbook

“Mainland has released a perfect ode to summer: the video for their single “Leave The Lights On.” – Earmilk

“Brooklyn indie rockers Mainland recently released their sophomore EP Shiner featuring four diverse songs of driven guitar rock, including noteworthy single “Savant” (streaming), an upbeat and semi-epic punk rock gem bearing sonic overtones ranging from spaghetti western soundtracks to the irresistible punk-folk of The Pogues.” – The Deli

Video: Teddybears – “Sunshine”

I love Teddybears. The group and the bears. And now, the group returns with a psychedelic summer jam, “Sunshine” (out now via Big Beat Records) which highlights their signature—pop x electronica x rock n’ roll x hip-hop x reggae x punk—and arrives with a video to accompany that shares an outrageous mix of themes and color schemes.

Featuring Jamaican dancehall star Natalie Storm and Swedish musician Kee Marcello (hailing from mega-bands Europe and Hellacopters); smashing a drum-kit made of ice, this playful video, combined with equal parts electric guitar, gold lamé, and neon illustrations is simply fun to watch – and definitely not like anything else you’ll see all day.

Goldfish For The Win!

unnamed (2)

At the star-studded MTV Africa Awards a few nights ago, South African band Goldfish scooped the night’s biggest gong, winning ‘Best Pop Act’ for their latest album Three Second Memory. The duo, currently on tour in Europe and Asia, flew back to pick up the accolade in front of a live audience with millions more watching on TV sets around the world.

Goldfish, who figured heavily in the official after-movie for Ultra South Africa, also unveiled the new video for their latest track “Moonwalk Away (Moonlanding Mix)”, featuring historic footage of the first moon landings plus incredible time-lapse photography from both the International Space Station (ISS) and the starlit plains of Africa.

Having used original recordings of Neil Armstrong and Mission Control in the remix, Dominic Peters and David Poole contacted NASA on the off-chance that they could use archived film from the ISS and the moon landing itself. “We never expected to get a response,” said Dom, “but they came back saying we were welcome to use any of the footage!”

“The video also has African children’s voices in it and we’re from South Africa, so we wanted to give it an African perspective too. After much back and forth with various landscape photographers traveling around the world we got some mind blowing time-lapses of the African sky shot from around southern Africa.”
The remix, part of a package that includes edits from German stars Alle Farben and Lexer, is indicative of Goldfish’s symphonic yet funk-filled production work; sweeping orchestral sections and evocative piano chords harmonize against warm, driving percussion segments and spine-tingling vocals to create beautiful house music of the absolute highest degree.

“Equal parts chilly krautrock majesty and proto-synthpop menace  – NME MAGAZINE

New York based one man project, BL_NK  SP_C_S has released his debut album on the fledgling You Records label.

Memory Man, recorded with producer Martin Dubka (Aeroplane / Kitsune), features ten tracks including the recent critically acclaimed and BBC 6Music,  XFM and Amazing Radio endorsed download single “The Great Shark Hunt”. A special video single of the “Memory Man” track, which was inspired by David Bowie’s “The Man Who Fell To Earth” and Maya Deren’s classic  “Meshes Of The Afternoon” short, can be viewed here:

BL_NK  SP_C_S began making his own take on electronic pop music last year and records everything on tape in his bedroom based analogue studio. His synth laden melodies, krautrock guitars and pop sensibilities draw influence from Eno, Neu, Morricone and The The, but there is something truly new and exciting about his sound. Soaring and uplifting there are too may highlights to mention, but album opener “A Parting Gift”, “Sneaking Back In”,  “No Sleep”, “Start”, “Heavy The Lay The Crown” and the eponymous album title track are as diverse and catchy as any great songs you will hear this year and beyond.

Video: Charli XCX – “Boom Clap”

“’Boom Clap’ is a magical song to me. It celebrates epic love. I want people to dance and cry to it, and scream it at the top of their lungs.” — Charli XCX

London-based singer/songwriter Charli XCX delivers a new video for her single, “Boom Clap” off the highly anticipated ‘The Fault in Our Stars: Music From the Motion Picture’ soundtrack, for sale via Atlantic Records.
