“The sun sets in the background as the band plays on, masterfully achieving an organic sound…” Elmore Magazine

“Sharing their funk and psychedelic rock influences through visuals that reinforce its sound, the hypnotic track is set to a magical journey that sees the band’s members riding on bongo drums while coming in contact with electrified lily pads” NYLON Guys

“Kiev’s genre-transcending full-length […] exudes a powerful otherworldly quality, as if Orange County-based band of sophisticates give in at times to the urge to simply space out.” Buzzbands.LA

Orange County alt-rockers Kiev released their debut full-length album, Falling Bough Wisdom Teeth, in October of last year. In support of the record, the band is kicking off a west coast tour today with fellow Californians Bad Suns.

Having recently unveiled their otherworldly video for Falling Bough Wisdom Teeth album cut “Be Gone Dull Cage,” the band has now dropped an incredible live video of “Solving and Running”- shot in a stunningly picturesque desert locale.

Falling Bough Wisdom Teeth was produced & engineered by Chris Shaw (Wilco, Phish, Super Furry Animals), and pays homage to collective band influences & minimalist pioneer Steve Reich. The members of Kiev have strong connections to the world of visual art, and have orchestrated & added a multi-faceted 3D element to their live performances. Additionally, the LP art was originally a band favorite by renowned contemporary artist Walton Ford, who gave the band his blessing to use it as the cover for Falling Bough Wisdom Teeth upon hearing the record & how it spoke to his painting.

Just days after “Strong” was released onto Beatport, soaring up the official Progressive Charts as we speak, French house duo Arno Cost and Norman Doray finally unleash the official video in all its 1980’s man-made fabric glory.

Set against a backdrop of bowling balls, perms and long-legged fan-girls, after throwing shade during the pre-match interviews rivals Arno and Norman head down to the lanes to go strike for strike in a pitched battle to determine just who is the strongest out of the two.

New Album: Setting Sun – Be Here When You Get There

settingsun

“dramatic and poignant”  –  NPR

“Setting Sun create an Arcade Fire urgency, creating sweeping orchestrations, driving rhythms.  Delicate, hushed vocals and well-crafted pop songs” – Pop Matters

“Incredibly well-crafted songs ” – USA Today

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Setting Sun. But, they’re back with a their fifth album called Be Here When You Get There out now (as of the 22nd) through Young Love Records.

Setting Sun’s songs are propelled by driving rhythms, tasteful acoustic guitar lines, graceful string orchestrations and frontman Gary Levitt’s intimate, earnest vocals.  Jen Turner (Here We Go Magic, Exclamation Pony) plays bass on the record. Levitt was born in Queens, New York but started the band in San Francisco. Brooklyn is now home base and is where this new album was recorded.

Have a listen at a couple of songs from the new album. Unfortunately, this playlist does not have the 2 songs that I like from the album, “Idiot” and “Singularity”, which the latter has sort of a Gary Jules sound to it. All of the songs remind me a teensy bit of the Dandy Warhols, too.

Here ya go!

Multiplatinum GRAMMY® Award-winning recording star Lorde will curate the soundtrack album for the upcoming third installment of the global blockbuster The Hunger Games franchise, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.  In addition to hand-picking the artists for The Mockingjay – Part 1 soundtrack, Lorde will provide the first single for the highly anticipated film and album. The soundtrack will be available via Republic Records this fall.

The 17-year-old New Zealand native –who will embark on her third national North American tour this fall– exploded onto the scene with her Number One global hit “Royals,” and has taken the music world by storm since the release of her critically acclaimed platinum debut album Pure Heroine.

“Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly-anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance,” said Lorde.  “The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people.”

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson, is the latest installment in Lionsgate’s global box office phenomenon based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling “Hunger Games” trilogy and will be released in theaters worldwide on November 21, 2014.

Check ‘Em Out: The Point

unnamed (3)
“…the kind of chilled-out indie pop that makes you open your eyes a little wider, O’Neill’s meandering vocals anchored by an 80s-inflected beat” BlackBook

Brooklyn-based synth pop duo The Point share second single “Procrastination” from their forthcoming follow-up EP South Second due out August 12th. The new EP includes previously released track  “Fuck Money” as well as a cover of beloved Big Star classic “Thirteen”. The Point is the newly formed project of couple Michael O’Neill (JD Samson & MEN, Ladybug Transistor) and Sammy Tunis (formerly of The Lisps) who have translated their personal relationship – past, present and future –  into one of eclectic artistic collaboration. O’Neill says of the new track :

As a perfectionist, I constantly feel like I should be working or doing something “productive”.  But being so hard on myself is so overwhelming, it often leads to doing nothing at all.  In turn, I have felt creatively stifled, wasting countless hours feeling insecure, anti-social and bored.

One day, I went on a walk with no intended destination. Instead of staying home and staring blankly into a computer, i got up and suddenly left, walking around aimlessly for about 2 hours. In that time, I had a simple purpose – to put one foot in front of the other and enjoy myself and my surroundings.  I came home from that walk and immediately wrote this song.

The new collection of tracks follows the late spring release of their debut Somes Sound EP which explored electronic folk soundscapes and lilting narratives about failed relationships.

The Point was formed in the summer of 2013 when O’Neill and Tunis left New York City and temporarily moved to Maine, where a collection of ethereal songs emerged from the intimacy and isolation of city exile. They spent September on Mt. Desert Island, where they stayed in a friend’s home and recorded a demo in a barn over-looking the ocean.

The first of a series of three EPs, Somes Sound (named for a body of water on Mt. Desert Island) is, in Tunis’ words, “break-up songs we probably should have written years ago.” With a nostalgic and haunting 80s feel, these songs speak to a forgotten need for closure and a reckoning with the past, and they set the stage for the next two EPs, which deal with the present and future.

For those in the New York area The Point plays August 21st @ Mercury Lounge w/ Midnight Masses

Video: Mystery Skulls – Paralyzed

Mystery Skulls

Today, Mystery Skulls producer Luis Dubuc announces his single and video for his electro-funk tune “Paralyzed”, out today on Warner Bros. Records. Directed by Bo Mirosseni (Disclosure, Block Moth Super Rainbow), the clip features a number ghoulish figures who show off their extraordinary basketball skills complete with plenty of tricks and dunks like some spooky Harlem Globe Trotters, until we find a pleasant twist at the end. “Paralyzed” will come on Dubuc’s debut album out this fall, also on Warner Bros. and will also feature a collaboration with disco legend Niles Rogers.

Listen: Salme Dahlstrom – “Pop Ur Heart Out”

Salme Dahlstrom

“Music licensing queen.” – Wall Street Journal

“Relentlessly hooky and ridiculously accessible.” – Entertainment Weekly

The Wall Street Journal dubbed musician Salme Dahlstrom a “music licensing queen” when, like Moby before her, she managed to license every track from her 2008 album The Acid Cowgirl Audio Trade to various corporations and television programs.

At the time, Dahlstrom, who produces, performs, edits, and mixes all of her tracks herself, was not only just getting noticed, she was just getting started. “C’mon Y’All,” one of catchiest numbers on an album of catchy numbers, climbed Billboard’s Dance Chart and eventually received prominent placements in major ad campaigns for CoverGirl, Suave, and Kellogg’s that ran on primetime network television for months.

While managing what inevitably became a highly successful licensing business, Dahlstrom continued to do the work that got her there, and will now release “Pop Propaganda Volume 2: Retro Funk Soul Junction” on September 16th, 2014.  The new six-song collection is preceded by the single “Pop Ur Heart Out” – streaming now via Entertainment Weekly which calls the song “relentlessly hooky and ridiculously accessible.”

About “Pop Ur Heart Out,” Dahlstrom says, “I felt like bringing some soul and poetry to the party.  I used organic instruments – piano and acoustic guitar – and mixed them with glitch effects and Kaoss Pad to give it an electronic edge. It’s one of my new favorites!”

“Pop Propaganda Volume 2: Retro Funk Soul Junction” by Salme Dahlstrom is scheduled for release on September 16th, 2014 via Kontainer Music.  The first single “Pop Ur Heart Out” arrives on August 5th, 2014, accompanied by a trio of remixes of the track by SpekrFreks, DJ Phunkae, and Quadrat Beat on August 26th, 2014.

Check ‘Em Out: Braque

Braque

Listen: Braque – V1CES EP

BRAQUE is a UK (London) based multi-instrumentalist, he is also a writer, producer, and most of all artist who creates everything himself.

BRAQUE is part of a loose collective of musicians including the highly acclaimed BASTILLE and RAG N BONE MAN. Having written, produced and set up the BEST LAID PLANS label with both of these artists, BRAQUE now believes the time is right to forge ahead as a solo artist.

Influenced by artists like Prince and Kanye, BRAQUE creates shiny modern pop music with a definite slightly darker edge, underpinned by a strong, soaring vocal and grainy, artful imagery. This is definitely not throwaway bubblegum pop music, but an artist who wants to be taken seriously.

BRAQUE’S vision behind the V1CES EP is that each song encapsulates a vice that we have in our lives. This EP will be the first in a Trilogy and contains two singles, “Secrets” and a cover of Everything But the Girl’s “Miss the Rain”.

If you’re liking these, make sure to check out the whole EP (link above).

Check ‘Em Out: Sophie and the Bom Boms

sophiebbs_myles_pettengill

“I wrote these songs as if I was talking with my best girlfriends,” says Sophie Stern.

Sophie and The Bom Boms

Listen: Sophie and The Bom Boms – “Pray”

Her identity prior to this evocative new pop incarnation was as sought-after songwriter, earning her bread writing hits for A-listers like Britney Spears, British pop star Conor Maynard, and The Ready Set, among others. But make no mistake – this ain’t no wistful follow-your-dream template that Sophie is cooking up now.

What makes the 4 song offering so upbeat and engaging—besides the toppling beats bracing Stern’s sultry swagger—are the songs, themselves; soulfully primed missives like “Woman” —percolating drums and piano skating over Sophie’s empowering vocals.

“The Bom Boms are my backing band led by producer/multi-instrumentalist David Elevator,” Sophie explains. “He is my writing partner and produces all my songs. It’s always a surprise to me which Bom Boms are going to be at shows or rehearsals.  Sometimes it’s a big band, sometimes it’s just him.”
