Video: Phebe Starr – “Tonight”

Riding high on the wave of critical success in Phebe Starr’s native Australia, the Sydney-based electro-pop artiste has made a splash in the US with her debut EP, Zero– out now!

The Zero EP features tremendous vocals atop tribal beats, dramatic electronic chimes & sincere passionate refrains. Phebe just unveiled the striking video for EP cut Tonight,” which introduces symbolism with an entirely whitewashed set, aside from the sausages, steak & colored knives. On the color scheme, Phebe elaborates: “there is something so thought provoking about meat. It is so offensive, yet there is a fragility that encapsulates the human experience. I like to ingest a part of my heart and thoughts without spelling it out.”

Phebe previously unveiled Icelandic trio Steed Lord’s deliciously club-ready “Tonight” remix – an irresistible cut to power a dance-fueled trip into the night. Influenced by the likes of Kraftwerk, Bjork, The Cure, Beck & ‘90s beats, Phebe Starr has quickly become renowned for her effortless blend of organic sounds & ethereal electronic pop. Zero EP cut “Alone With You” garnered an impressive 50k downloads as the iTunes ‘Single of the Week’ in Australia & New Zealand.

NONONO Confirmed For SXSW

unnamed (5)
Swedish indie pop trio NONONO, aka striking lead singer/songwriter Stina Wappling and the production duo Astma & Rocwell, will return to the USA in April for a their first full tour of the states in support of twenty one pilots. A full list of tour dates is below. They are also confirmed for SXSW in March. NONONO are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut album, which is due out later this year. For the time being, fans can enjoy the four song Pumpin Blood EP, of which the title track you’ve surely heard before, even if you haven’t realized it. “Pumpin Blood” is climbing the Top 40 radio charts here in the US, as its on over 70 stations, including SiriusXM Hits1, WRVW Nashville, KBKS Seattle, and more. The song has also been used  in commercials for Samsung, Sparkling Ice and Late Night with Seth Meyer, and featured on shows like Dancing With The Stars, American Idol, Revenge, Cougar Town and Vampire Diaries among others.

NONONO has two tracks on the soundtrack to Universal Pictures’ upcoming movie Endless Love, a romantic drama starring Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) and Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) and directed by Shana Feste (Country Strong). The film hits theatres February 14th 2014. “Pumpin Blood” and The Jane Doze Remix of “Pumpin Blood” are both featured on an impressive indie soundtrack, which also features Tegan and Sara, The Bird and The Bee featuring Matt Berninger, Guards, Echosmith, and Tanlines.

NONONO played their first official US shows just this past fall, when they took New York City’s CMJ Music Marathon by storm, being championed by everyone from Billboard, who named them one of the “Best of CMJ 2013”, to Grantland, to TIME and even CMJ themselves, who highlighted the band in their “5 International Artists to Watch” feature. Fashion media has been quick to jump all over Stina’s natural beauty and the potential of NONONO. Vogue,ELLEGlamour and Into The Gloss all profiled Stina, and Refinery 29, Nylon and Harper’s Bazaar picked NONONO as an Artist To Watch in 2014. Stina is an unlikely, unassuming rock star in the making. She went to school in Brighton to become a psychologist, and then proceeded to work as a nurse in a mental institution. She’s been writing songs all her life, usually for other people though. It wasn’t until recently, when the 24 year old got linked up with Astma & Rocwell, that Stina stepped into the spotlight. Watch Stina and NONONO perform acoustic versions of “Pumpin Blood,” “Like The Wind,” and “Fire Without A Flame” for All Saints and also stopped by Perez Hilton for a session as well.

New Music: Emperor Yes – “The End Of The World”

artworks-000069794030-36pklf-t500x500

Power-trio Emperor Yes – London producer Ash Gardner along with Adam Betts of Three Trapped Tigers and Hugo Sheppard – release their latest single “The End Of The World” through Young And Lost Club, and herald of their approaching debut album.

An analogue anthem to the apocalypse, “The End Of The World” tells the tale of Earth-bound creatures submitting to fiery armageddon – set to a soundtrack of technicolor synthesiser riffs and heavenly harmonies. It’s how they would have wanted to go out.

Previous singles “Wasps” (“Sounds like a dream where the Unicorns and Yoshimi-era Flaming Lips collaborate with Summer Camp” – Pitchfork) and “Cosmos” (“a beast of a song, all gargantuan synth riffs and apocalypse-sized drums” – The Guardian) were similarly concerned with our own significance, connection to the bestial world and finding a place in the universe.

This trilogy of Emperor Yes singles have been appropriately visualised: “Wasps” was a paean to 80s VHS horror films and the “antpocalypse” (and subsequent revenge) was witnessed in “Cosmos” – both directed by video mega-lord Chris Boyle (Call of Duty, The Who, Dizzee Rascal, Warp). “The End Of The World” director Raul Gonzo (Enter Shikari, Thom Yorke, David Lynch) has the band playing a final house party as the world collapses around them, while guests act out roles of doomed animals.

The album’s Jimmy Edgar remix was premiered via Rolling Stone. “Jimmy Edgar is one of my favorite producers right now,” Ridha tells Rolling Stone. “On his remix he took the funk essence of the original and flipped it to a darker but club-friendlier banger. So killer!”.

In the past year, Boys Noize has toured the US, Europe, Asia, Australia and South Africa with his signature SKULL, and performed headline shows at ULTRA, Bonnaroo, HARD Summer and HARD Day Of The Dead. In addition to releasing the GO HARD EP last June, Boys Noize teamed up with Skrillex this year to form the new group Dog Blood and lit up Coachella, Lollapalooza, Electric Zoo and HARD Summer with an electrifying live show. Entertainment Weekly described the Dog Blood debut at Coachella as “the world’s most joyous Satanic ritual. It was mystifying but fascinating—the Sahara Tent became its own congregation complete with everything but the swinging incense.” In September 2013 Dog Blood released the Middle Finger Part II EP.

Baby Alpaca – “Sea of Dreams” (Turbotito Remix) + EP

unnamed (1)

“…the first single, “Sea of Dreams,” an ethereal torch song that showcases Mr. Kittrell’s haunting KD-Lang-esque vocals, exploded on the Web.” – New York Times

“…I love the threat of a trance song lurking beneath such sleepy-eyed vocals…” – FADER

“…Sea of Dreams, which channels The Smiths with it’s dreamy, light dada-rock production – think soft, romantic rock that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. His debut EP ranges from playful to emotional, but always leaves you impressed.“ – Disco Naïveté

“My dreams are never like Chris Kitrell’s “Sea of Dreams,” but I wish they were.” – NPR’s Bob Boilen

After releasing their critically acclaimed self-titled debut EP in June, Baby Alpaca has spent time in Los Angeles (opening for Best Coast) and recorded and played in Seattle, Portland, Chris’ hometown Cincinnati and their home in New York for the CMJ Festival. The band is working on a full-length album, but before that they’ll release the Strictly Sexual EP on March 2nd via Atlas Chair. The EP consists of remixes by Shaun J. Wright & Alinka, Druzzi from The Rapture, Alex Suarez & Illyse / aka asis, Turbotito, TheArtSnobs and WYNN from Twin Shadow and showcases a wide emotional landscape around the gorgeous original song structures.

Today, NOWNESS has premiered the Chris Kittrell directed music video for “Sea of Dreams” (Turbotito Remix) which you can see here.

Last year, Vice’s NOISEY premiered the official “Wild Child” music video directed by Brian Leckrone and Adrian Stucker in the outskirts of Palm Springs in between the Coachella weekends.  You can hear two brand new tracks “Island of Love” and “When I See You Again” in their recent Daytrotter session HERE.

When trying to identify the music made by NYC band Baby Alpaca, it’s perhaps easier to try and figure out what the music is NOT. Judging by the music on the band’s first proper EP, it’s easy to say that this is definitely not your standard indie rock fare: an autoharp is involved, as well as both live and programmed beats and a smattering of guitars. The music eschews any musical tropes typically assigned to wispy bedroom electronica, beardy folk music, or the new wave of alternative R&B, but it could perhaps exist as a distant cousin to all of those things. Buoyed aloft by the winsome vocals of front man Chris Kittrell and shaped by the guitar styling of Zach McMillan, Baby Alpaca make music that is both romantic, vaguely tropical, and sufficiently futuristic—music that seems born of a million dramatic road trips that might provide a suitable soundtrack for a million more.

The four songs on the Baby Alpaca EP make for a striking, remarkably blissed-out statement of intent. The EP’s first single, “Sea of Dreams” (whose Dada-esque video premiered earlier this year via NPR.org) is as fitting an introduction as any band could hope to have: all echo-chamber vocals that seem to be haunted by reverby guitar lines and gently-played piano notes that drift through the song like ghosts. Tracks like “Wild Child” and “On The Roam” evoke a palpable sense of modern restlessness, something that permeates all of Baby Alpaca’s music. It’s a feeling that Kittrell attributes to his own meandering youth—a time spent experimenting, studying, travelling, and trying to locate his own creative voice.

“A lot of this music is about running away,” explains Kittrell, “I don’t mean that in a escapist kind of way, but more in terms of exploration. So much of my life has been about running away from tradition and traditional ways of thinking, which seeps into the music we make together. It’s about discovery. It’s not so much about running away from something bad, but rather running towards something really beautiful.”

Baby Alpaca continues to turn heads with their sublime use of sound and vision, both in a live setting and via the creation of new songs and video productions.

Video: patten – “Agen”

Abstract” is a word that often gets thrown around when talking about experimental music, but patten’s sounds are genuinely intangible, amorphous and seem to be constantly in flux. Familiar sounds become foreign, foreign sounds seem familiar, and it’s impossible to say where one thing ends and another begins.” – FADER

juggles multiple rhythms, moving at drastically different BPMs through its distorted drum beats, airy pitch shifted vocals, and choppy editing like a sunnier take on Actress” – Stereogum

The video for “Agen”, taken from upcoming record ESTOILE NAIANT, is an elegant exercise in typology, directed by regular collaborator Jane Eastlight. Trawling hundreds of image search terms to create a unique vision of a fever-dreaming stream of consciousness, Eastlight’s ultra-modern psychedelia perfectly mirrors patten’s entrancing and opulent sound.

ESTOILE NAIANT, patten’s debut album on Warp will be released on February 25. The full-length sees him step out of the shadows and into full focus as a producer of impending resonance. patten has already performed in front of thousands at the Tate in London, and played in the US for the first time in early January in NYC with shows at Joe’s Pub as part of an APAP showcase, Output, and participated in the first 285 Kent farewell show along with Laurel Halo and Autre Ne Veut.
