New Downloads: WOLFRAM

Euro and Italo disco, in their purest forms, are undeniably worthy strains of this thing we call club music. Austrian mixer Wolfram believes that the populace often forgets this, and we’re partial to agree—like any genre, there is a lot of bad Euro/Italo out there, clogging our ears with tacky, unimaginative glitter.

This Johan Agebjorn take on “Fireworks” (feat. Hercules & Love Affair) is the first step in Wolfram’s campaign to rid the world’s dancefloors of junk. Supple and slinky, this track is cold new wave, golden ballad, and irresistible 90s-tinged synthpop all in one. — RCRD LBL

The full debut won’t be out until April, but here’s something to hold you over.

Newest Love: Gordon Voidwell

On the track, “Ivy League Circus,” the velvety, 80’s R&B style vocals glide over an elastic, electro-funk groove. The clip was directed by The Wilderness, who also helmed videos for Passion Pit, The Juan MacLean, Antipop Consortium, and Spank Rock.

He has produced songs on both Das Racist mixtapes (“Shorty Said” and “Puerto Rican Cousins”), an official remix of Twin Shadow’s I Can’t Wait,” and the track “Spring Fever” for battle rap king Iron Solomon.

Gordon has also won the adorations of everyone from indie darlings BRAHMS (who remixed Voidwell’s “Ivy League Circus”) to pop music masterminds like Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson (who declared “I love this shit.  I play it on my radio show, in my house AND in my sets.”)  Mayer Hawthorne, another fan, even invited Gordon to open his tour this past Fall along with The Heavy. His first full length debut album will be out later this year.

You can grab a free download of the original AND BRAHMS remix of “Ivy League Circus” over at Stereogum: click here!

Dearling Physique

Last month, I posted a video from new band Dearling Physique. Now, the Minneapolis band is the “Artist of the Week” this week on MTV’s new music blog, Iggy. Read their Q & A with Domino Davis by clicking here.

The band’s debut album Deadeye Dealer is out now. Also, they’ll be at SXSW on March 15th when they appear as part of the Art Disaster/Fanatic showcase at Beauty Bar. You can grab a couple free mp3’s by clicking here and heading to Last.fm.

The two singles that have been getting the group attention are “Discipline Your Hands” and “Monster,” both of which are the best from Deadeye Dealer. Though I like the idea of the group and think they’re interesting, those are the only two tracks that got more than 2 stars from me. “Sleep and the Heart” almost gave me nightmares from the demonic, scary sounding voices. Otherwise, they have similarities to Depeche Mode, which is a plus; unfortunately, I just couldn’t get as “into” them as I’d hoped.

New Video: Poly Styrene – “Virtual Boyfriend”

At the end of 2010, Poly Styrene, the unforgettable frontwoman and iconic face of the seminal band X-ray Spex announced her return to the music scene. A true musical; and fashion rebel, Poly Styrene has returned at her most thrilling.

X-ray Spex may have only been around for a couple of years but their star shone brightly. Poly Styrene’s return is highly anticipated; she remains a genuine icon and one of the premier influences on the Riot Grrrl and Britpop scenes. Currently, a new set of young American bands like the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs, The Gossip and countless others recognize her fiery, irrepressible presence. With her great self-styled image, brilliantly sharp lyrics and powerful presence, Poly’s indomitable spirit still inspires.

The NMS Artist on the Verge Top 100 is compiled based on analytics both online and traditional. Factors considered include: music sales (physical and digital) ticket sales, frequency of gigs, touring history, merchandise sales, media (both online and print), social media activity, online buzz and other factors as determined by the NMS Music Committee.

Artists are further evaluated by using an arsenal of analytics from NMS Partners: BigChampagne, Next Big Sound, ReverbNation and OurStage; music industry experts and tastemakers. From this collected data, the NMS Music Committee selects The Artists on the Verge Top 100, which are listed alphabetically, regardless of genre.

The Artist on the Verge Project is a closed process and solicitations are never accepted or considered. The NMS Artist on the Verge Project is NOT an open contest for artists to submit their music to NMS like other contests, which are subjective in nature. NMS does not charge artists to enter or to be selected.

Favorite Song: Graffiti6 “Stare Into the Sun”

UK producer TommyD and singer/songwriter Jamie Scott started collaborating in 2008 on material that would become Graffiti6. Jamie Scott is not hard to look at either…at all. Wow. Kinda sorta looks like Nick Lachey, but waaaaaaaay hotter and waaaaaaaay cooler…yes, I know that’s a contradiction, but you get it.
