New Music: Glasnost “Corridor”

Last year I encouraged you to check out Glasnost. They did a remix of La Roux‘s “Bulletproof” that was pretty sick. Seemingly, most people have gotten to know the group for their recently released remixes. Yet, aside from producing killer dance floor remixes, Glasnost is also a live, four piece, electro pop band and DJ crew. Now they’ve released their newest original track, “Corridor.”

Their influences include Cut Copy, New Order, MSTRKRFT and Midnight Juggernauts. Glasnost remixes have been exciting blogs and dance floors worldwide. While releasing other “Glastnostized” renditions of tracks like Tiga’s “What you Need” and most recently Metric’s “Hands,” the band’s been busy producing their next collection of original tracks for their forthcoming album, Decade, due to release in late April. (AND right now they are at SXSW!)

Click here to check out Glasnost’s “Corridor” (AND remixes from Kids at the Bar, Midnight Conspiracy and NightWaves!)

New Download: Luke Rathborne

On the heels of an extremely successful trip to the UK which landed Luke Rathborne love from NME and the BBC, Luke returns to the US just in time for the release of his debut album, the split EP I Can Be One E.P. / Dog  Years E.P., which is out now via Dilettante Recordings.

People have been asking –  why the split EP?  Rather than  muddling his music’s disparate take on the world around  him, attempting to intertwine songs written under  different circumstances and in different frames of mind,  Rathborne decided to offer audiences his ideal window  into his headscape – two EPs, each unique in their own right, as one  album.

Dog Years EP (stream in its entirety on Soundcloud) embraces Rathborne’s more pop aesthetic – not shiny, happy pop, but effervescent, melancholic pop.  The title track offers a cynical poke to not letting the “dog years” pass you by.  The material from the I Can Be One EP was penned following Rathborne’s move to New York City after high school and completed with members of Antony and the Johnsons contributing to the arrangements.   The material on this EP takes on a somber, darker hue.

But while the tones change, the inspiration is largely the same. “All of the songs – on both EPs – are about being afraid of connecting, because connections open up the possibility of being harmed…It’s interesting that they intersect here, because I’d been playing with the idea of putting them together and seeing how they mix, but this seems a lot more pure – this is my music, this is what I want to say, and this is how I want to say it,” Luke explains.

If you’re headed to SXSW, don’t miss Luke Rathborne when he opens for The Stokes.

Clock Opera – “Belongings”

British band on the rise, Clock Opera will release their beautiful new single “Belongings” on May 9th via UK label Moshi Moshi (known for the early championship of acts like Florence and the Machine), as well as making their way across the pond to Austin’s SXSW to showcase their dynamic live show which is garnering them praise and fans in leaps and bounds.

Produced by front man Guy Connelly, “Belongings” is already a highlight of their live set; an incredibly beautiful and emotive song, while the b-side is the understated brooding and delicate “Let Go The Lifeboats.”

They have supported the likes of Yeasayer and Au Revoir Simone on their UK tours and have also delivered inspired remixes for the aforementioned artists as well as reinterpretations of The Drums and The Golden Filter. Clock Opera will be performing at this year’s SXSW festival for the first time, and wrapping up recording their debut album slated to see release later this year.

Newest Love: French Horn Rebellion

French Horn Rebellion (Robert and David Perlick-Molinari) kick off 2011 by announcing the US self-release of their debut album The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion on April 19th digitally and May 24th physically (Once Upon A Time Records). They’re also appearing at Austin’s SXSW, stopping for an Asian date with MGMT and embarking on a 27 date North American tour supporting French electro pop outfit Yelle starting 17th April.

Written, produced and mixed by Robert and David,The Infinite Music…’ is a debut album that warps the fabric of dance, electro, rock and funk. Crucially, the album also follows an intergalactic narrative that tracks the physical and emotional journey of an unknown French Horn player. “There is a story running through the album, it’s about the Universe. We’re pretty clear on what the story is, but what you take away from it may be something entirely different,” says David.

On the back of just three EP’s to date, these two unassuming brothers, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have already toured and played with the likes of Hot Chip, Sleigh Bells, The Drums, Cut Copy and SebastiAn.

The Brooklyn-based duo already had an illustrious pedigree; David produced MGMT’s indie release, Time to Pretend EP for New York indie Cantora Records. The band have also remixed the likes of MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD and Alex Winston. Following packed out NYC performances at CMJ, the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival and in support to MNDR at the launch of new Neon Gold / Popjustice party POPSHOP, FHR will visit Europe in March for a handful of shows before heading home to play SXSW and then on to Asia for shows in Hong Kong (w/ MGMT), China, Korea and Japan. Their 27 date North American tour supporting Yelle kicks off in Phoenix on April 17th.

Dearling Physique

Last month, I posted a video from new band Dearling Physique. Now, the Minneapolis band is the “Artist of the Week” this week on MTV’s new music blog, Iggy. Read their Q & A with Domino Davis by clicking here.

The band’s debut album Deadeye Dealer is out now. Also, they’ll be at SXSW on March 15th when they appear as part of the Art Disaster/Fanatic showcase at Beauty Bar. You can grab a couple free mp3’s by clicking here and heading to Last.fm.

The two singles that have been getting the group attention are “Discipline Your Hands” and “Monster,” both of which are the best from Deadeye Dealer. Though I like the idea of the group and think they’re interesting, those are the only two tracks that got more than 2 stars from me. “Sleep and the Heart” almost gave me nightmares from the demonic, scary sounding voices. Otherwise, they have similarities to Depeche Mode, which is a plus; unfortunately, I just couldn’t get as “into” them as I’d hoped.

New Video from Yacht: The Afterlife

YACHT – The Afterlife from Jona Bechtolt on Vimeo.

Here is a statement from YACHT about the video:

Water baptism is a ritual act which gives people a profound  sense of renewal and rebirth. Baptism initiates, purifies, and gives a name. Baptism need not be dogmatic. It can be, rather, a pure experience of the body: anticipation, cold, shock, brevity, commitment, and emergence, relief.

YACHT’s video for “the Afterlife,” directed by longtime collaborator Judah Switzer, is an exercise in this new tradition of non-denominational baptism. YACHT is baptized repeatedly in the bodies of water — river, fountain, waterfall, lake — of their home state of Oregon, a physical immersion in a place that has profoundly affected their lives. The raw shock, the pure feeling of cold water on skin, is unflinchingly documented by high-definition RED Cameras operating in slow-motion.

YACHT demonstrates their commitment to place, ideology, and their project with pure wet vulnerability and symbolic death. The song says, “It’s not a place you go, it’s a place that comes to you.”

P.S. I’m pretty jealous that Pitchfork called Yacht’s performance “the biggest dance party” at SXSW and I wasn’t there. 😦
